ProPublica recently published a stunning investigation into a new right-wing movement to infiltrate the American electoral system, spurred by the lie that the 2020 election was stolen from former President Donald Trump.

Fueled by calls from former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, thousands of new precinct officers — who in some cases collectively have the power to help elect members of election oversight boards — have already signed up in key battleground states, including Michigan and Florida.

...Republicans repeating that lie helped lead to the storming of the U.S. Capitol, but if you thought Jan. 6th was bad, Bannon’s new army could make the size and appeal of such an event five times worse.

Three retired U.S. generals warned in a chilling column Friday that another coup attempt in America in 2024 could divide the military and plunge an unprepared nation into civil war.

“With the country still as divided as ever, we must take steps to prepare for the worst,” wrote former Army Major Gen. Paul Eaton, former Brigadier Gen. Steven Anderson and former Army Major Gen. Antonio Taguba.

As the nation nears the first anniversary of the Capitol riot, the generals are “increasingly concerned about the aftermath of the 2024 presidential election and the potential for lethal chaos inside our military, which would put all Americans at severe risk,” they wrote in The Washington Post.

“In short: We are chilled to our bones at the thought of a coup succeeding next time,” they added.

The next time could be far more cataclysmic if members of the military throw in with those who want to overthrow the government, the generals warned.

“Without constant maintenance, the potential for a military breakdown mirroring societal or political breakdown is very real,” the trio noted.

At the five-hour event, which Hatewatch reporters attended, white nationalists Peter and Lydia Brimelow of VDARE hobnobbed with Steve Bannon, a former Trump adviser and White House official. Donald Trump Jr. was also in attendance.

Republicans publicly lauded members in attendance from an Austrian political party founded by World War II-era Nazi party members. Racist political operative Jack Posobiec shared jokes across a table with Josh Hammer, the opinion editor of Newsweek. Multiple recently elected GOP congresspeople applauded Marjorie Taylor Greene, who told the NYYRC crowd in the event’s closing remarks that the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol would have succeeded if she had planned it and that the insurrectionists would have been armed.
